The cancelling of the headphone jack was a scary moment for Synthetic. For the first time the possibility of it becoming abandonware felt real. Also worrying were the threat of OpenGL deprecation, iOS audio thread’s loss in priority, that I had no patience for AUV3, and the failed promise of touch-enabled Macbooks.
I had already turned to Blender and 3D printing as my new hobby and addiction, but in a surprising turn of events one day I had a look at a bit of Vulkan sample code and my developer enthusiasm was back. (https://github.com/SaschaWillems/Vulkan)
I am now re-writing Synthetic to run on Linux touch-enabled computers using the Vulkan 3D API. The first target devices are the Steam Deck, Lenovo Yoga Thinkpads, Asus ZenBooks and HP X360s. Ultimately Synthetic will run on any Linux computer with Vulkan drivers and 2GB of RAM.

The re-write has been completed. Performance and battery consumption are fine. The 10 finger touchscreen works great in every computer I tested. 3D accelerometers work well in making keyboards and touchscreens velocity-sensitive, with good precision and dynamic range. On a modern PC ALSA works without glitches with a 2ms audio buffer size. On 2012 computers it still works fine with a 8ms buffer. Touchscreen Linux computers are awesome!
